Legislating Healthy Food and Capitalism’s Effect on Making Kids Fat

Food is one of the biggest backfires of capitalism. Most people know I’m a conservative. Here’s my thought process: We subsidize farmers and create / regulate the market. So capitalism is out the door at that point. But it gets worse: In areas with a lower economic status, such as the areas Michelle Obama is trying to target, stores don’t want to stock healthy food. They only stock what sells. Vendors are the same way, they come in, they put product up in quantities and types that will move. They have goals to meet as well. I’ve seen healthy food introduced at some of these stores but it just sits and sits, then when it’s removed it’s never replenished.
I’ve seen the range of stores in my prior career – I’ve also been in line with food stamp recipients with 90% of their cart filled with JUNK food, and it’s 3x what I can budget for all of my food for the MONTH. I have a small handbasket, they have a cart of twinkies. The stores and vendors know healthy food won’t sell in lower SES areas so why stock it? Publix couldn’t even justify opening a location in my area, they tried, my house was part of a landswap deal with H.G. Hill reality to bring Publix to East Nashville but between some zoning issues w/the check cashing place in the 3rd property spot and the lack of market support, it just couldn’t happen. So some of the obesity and junkiness we see is market driven.
I have to drive an extra $10 in gas EACH WEEK to healthy food, to a Trader Joes and Whole Foods in Green Hills. EVERY WEEK. It’s the closest healthy food to where I live. Sad. But true. Others can’t drive that far or dont’ have cars so they’re stuck. So I GET what Michelle Obama and her team are trying to do, target the one area where she can regulate meals and help make kids healthier. It’s just between the fact that you can’t legislate nutrition and when the kids get home it’s just the same old junk…you can’t win. I sympathize with her but the system’s rigged against getting better nutrition to kids.
